Summer research

Here's a taste of my summer research...I am doing a cross-breeding experiment using Echinacea angustifolia (purple cone flower). Below you can see the pollinator exclusion cages/nets that I am using.

Please check out our field blog (flog) at http://echinacea.umn.edu/index.html for lots more photos and an overview of the goals of the whole project (not just my little piece of it). We are trying to get visitors to the site from interesting locations around the world, so please visit!

more info on my thumb

I can see that I didn't include enough information! I've had rheumatoid arthritis for about 10 years, and it has caused some damage to some of my joints. That crooked joint in my left thumb was loose and not very usefull for picking things up. So, my hand surgeon fused the metacarpal and first phalange. I will lose a little bit of mobility, but should gain a lot of stability in that thumb. There has been some pain, but not too bad, really.

Here's my favorite comic relating to the current presidential race...funny thing is that it's OBAMA's campaign that is mostly shouting that he will bring change. For more, click on doonesbury.
